Why You Might Need A Pessary

A pessary is typically recommended if you have pelvic organ prolapse, which occurs when one or more pelvic organs (uterus, bladder, urethra, or rectal wall) descend from their normal position. You might need a pessary if you experience:

  • A feeling of pressure or fullness in your pelvis

  • A sensation that something is falling out of your vagina

  • Pain in your groin or back

  • Urinary problems such as leakage or frequent urination

Pessaries are often recommended for people who:

  • Have gone through pregnancy and childbirth

  • Regularly perform heavy lifting

  • Suffer from chronic constipation or coughing

  • Are post-menopausal

What Happens During a Pessary Fitting

  1. Initial Assessment: We will first examine the health of your vaginal tissues and evaluate the type and severity of prolapse.

  2. Measurements: We’ll take measurements of your vaginal length and width to determine the appropriate pessary size and style.

  3. Trial Fitting: Several pessary sizes or styles might be tried until finding one that fits comfortably. We will insert the pessary and position it properly.

  4. Activity Testing: Once fitted, you'll be asked to move around, jump, cough, and strain to ensure the pessary stays in place during various activities.

  5. Bathroom Test: You'll typically be asked to urinate with the pessary in place to confirm it doesn't interfere with this function.

  6. Instruction: You'll receive training on how to insert and remove the pessary yourself, though some people prefer to have their provider handle this maintenance.

  7. Care Instructions: We’ll will explain how to clean the pessary and may recommend a vaginal gel to maintain moisture and proper pH balance.

  8. Follow-up Planning: A follow-up appointment (usually after one week) will be scheduled to assess how the pessary is working and make any necessary adjustments.

The entire process typically takes about 30-60 minutes, and finding the right fit might require more than one appointment, as pessary fitting is often described as "an art, not a science."
